Established in 1971, the Wood Awards aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding wood design, craftsmanship and installation. For 2024, the competition featured ten categories divided into Buildings and Furniture & Objects, spotlighting projects that blend artistry, functionality and sustainability. With an ever increasing focus on environmental responsibility, wood has emerged as a standout material in construction as it generates low-carbon, high quality buildings.
The College鈥檚 new River Room is the 2024 winner in the education and public sector with judges commenting that 鈥渢he building鈥檚 beautiful finish is a testament to significant design detailing and coordination, including the creation of 525 individual structural connection details. Timber connections draw on traditional carpentry joints, such as dovetails and mortices, resulting in a startlingly low amount of steelwork.鈥
The long awaited caf茅 by the River opened just over a year ago, and continues to be a popular choice for students, staff and Fellows.
